How French Mums Prevent Diaper Rash - For Good đŸŒđŸ‡«đŸ‡·

How French Mums Prevent Diaper Rash - For Good đŸŒđŸ‡«đŸ‡·

If you’ve ever opened a nappy to find red, sore skin - you know the sinking feeling.
You switch brands, try every cream, go fragrance-free
 and still the rash returns.

Meanwhile, French mums hardly deal with this at all.

Their babies stay calm, soft, and for the most part, rash-free - without endless creams or complicated routines.

Their secret?

One simple product and a few timeless habits that keep irritation away before it starts.

Here’s how they do it and how you can too.

1. The Real Cause of Diaper Rash (and What to Do About It)

Rashes usually come down to one thing: moisture + friction.

Urine is acidic, stool contains skin-breaking enzymes, and when you add warmth, tight nappies, harsh baby wipes or synthetic fabrics, irritation is almost guaranteed.

French mums address the basics first:

Change frequently – As soon as the nappy is wet. The goal is to keep skin dry and limit contact with acidic urine that fuels inflammation.

Choose the right size – Bigger isn’t better. A too-tight nappy traps heat; a too-small one leaks and rubs, causing redness.

Avoid tight clothing – Those ever-so-cute outfits can trap heat and create friction. Let air circulate around the legs and tummy to keep skin calm.

2. The French Trick: “Air Time” ☁

One of the easiest ways to prevent diaper rash? Nappy-free time.
Lay your baby on a soft towel and let the skin breathe. Air time dries moisture and stops redness before it starts.

Even five minutes after each change makes a difference.

Here’s the French twist:

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· After a bath, never put your baby straight into a nappy.

First, gently clean the area with a soft cotton pad, like Cheeky Bébés organic cotton pads, especially in the folds and creases, then let the skin air dry, while you comb their hair or put their clothes on, bottoms and nappy last!

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Some French mums use a hair dryer on a cool setting to gently dry baby’s folds after a bath or nappy change. This removes any hidden moisture.

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Others use a "cotton couche", a thick cotton insert that goes inside the nappy, to keep skin dry and breathable between changes. To save you time and money, you can just use a few Cheeky bebe's cotton pads.

Simple habits, big results.

3. Forget Baby Wipes - Use Liniment, the French Secret Weapon đŸ‡«đŸ‡·

I lived in France for several years, and after having my babies, I discovered a little secret that completely changed my nappy routine: liniment.

Forget harsh baby wipes. French mums swear by liniment oléo-calcaire, made from all natural ingredients like olive oil and lime water. Paired with an organic cotton pad, it keeps baby bums soft, calm and rash-free.

Why I love it: my daughters and I have super sensitive skin, and baby wipes were a nightmare.

While a lot of people now use water wipes, I personally find water-based products, are often too harsh for sensitive skin, and especially delicate baby skin. Liniment worked perfectly on my premmie firstborn and her sister, right through their nappy days.

It does three things in one swipe:

✅ Cleans:  gently removes residue without rubbing

✅ Neutralises acidity: counteracts wee and poo

✅ Protects:  leaves a thin protective layer against friction and irritation.

Thanks to olive oil and organic beeswax, liniment leaves a gentle sheen, so there’s no need for extra barrier cream. I loved it so much I now sell it in Australia as Cheeky BĂ©bĂ© Liniment, so other mums can experience the magic too.

The French approach is simple: prevention, patience and breathable cotton clothes. No frantic cream rotations. No harsh products. Just calm, happy bums.

4. Keep It Simple (and Fragrance-Free)

Many “baby” products are packed with alcohols, perfumes or preservatives that can sting sensitive skin.

French mums stick to simple, fragrance-free baby skincare- only gentle baby products like organic cleansers and shampoos, and liniment - a nappy-chaning lotion - which is also a great cradle cap remedy!

I did notice a funny little contradiction however: baby perfume. Yes, you read right.
Some French mums love to put a tiny spritz of scented water on their baby's clothing. I guess French baby's smell as chic as they look. You'll often see baby gift sets with an adorable doudou (soft toy), muslin wrap, rattle, and yes, a mini perfume bottle!

Exception to the rule: Everything bébé for French mums should be fragrance-free... but who can resist these tiny baby perfume bottles?

5. When Rash Appears: Skip Sudocrem, Reach for Cicalfate

Those red, sore spots on your baby’s bottom are heartbreaking. Instead of slathering on thick pastes like Sudocrem, which can trap heat and sometimes make irritation worse, French mums turn to Cicalfate cream. Yes, I've found it at Chemist Warehouse!

It’s light, reparative, and actually soothes and heals without suffocating delicate skin. I personally loved it - it even helped my post-birth scars heal after my caesarean.

This isn’t a paid ad, it was recommended to me by all my French mum friends and I won’t be the one the gatekeep it!

6. The Clothing Factor: Breathable, Not Bulky

French mama’s are OB-sessed with bio, cotton clothing. And it’s no wonder, as tight or synthetic fabrics are one of the most overlooked causes of nappy rash.

French mums are keen detectives at clothing stores, scruntising tags for organic cotton baby clothes,  and soft, breathable pieces that let air circulate. They also have to be “adorable” or “chic”.

Soft and lightweight, these little pants are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton muslin. Perfect for nappy-free time that allows air to flow.

Breathble baby clothing like loose-fitting rompers, soft leggings, or simple cotton onesies help reduce friction and prevent nappy rash from starting.

Et voilà ! That’s it. No long lists of creams, no frantic product switching - just gentle consistency.

When to Get Help

If redness worsens, spreads, or doesn’t improve after a few days, call your doctor.
Sometimes it’s linked to food sensitivities, constant use of harsh baby wipes, oral thrush or even tight straps in the stroller or car seat pressing against the nappy.

Keep a quick diary of what baby eats and any new products used - small patterns often reveal the cause.

The Takeaway

You don’t need 10 creams, daily baths or medicated wipes to keep your baby’s skin healthy.

What French mums have mastered is prevention, patience and purity:

💧 Keep moisture away
🌿 Protect with liniment - a miracle nappy changing lotion
☁ Give skin time to breathe
👕 Dress for comfort, not just cuteness

Try the French way for one week - and you’ll see the difference in your baby’s skin (and your peace of mind).
